Spring Break, But Make It Calligraphy, Commissions and Couch Time
If my spring break was a movie, it’d be a little like Ferris Bueller meets Friday (minus skipping the school, and well, the Mary Jane 😎).
I think April is the point during the school year where most teachers need to stop and take a breather.
It’s me. I am most teachers. 🙋🏾♀️
But, I don’t think the breaks I take are typical…While most teachers I know are thinking beach and umbrellas, my breaks are fueled by calligraphy and painting work, catching up on workshops, and the occasional binge-watching. Like the baby of the generations that produced Ferris and Craig, I say, “How much can I actually fit into this time…and still chill?”
The answer?
A whole lot.
Day One: Bloom Where You’re Flourished
On Good Friday, I kicked things off by diving into Schin Loong’s Blooming Flourishes class. The class itself isn’t long, but between practicing the floral embellishments and trying not to overthink every loop, it definitely gave me plenty to chew on.
But hey, it's spring break — we’ve got nothing but time, right? 🌷
I didn’t catch up on all my online classes, but the time I spent blooming with Schin’s lessons was well worth it.
Day Two: Live at Nordstrom
The next day, I packed up my paints and headed to Nordstrom at King of Prussia Mall for a live event with Westman Atelier. Since Westman Atelier is all about clean, vegan beauty, I swapped out my usual fragrance bottles and painted on compacts, lip gloss tubes, and other beauty goodies.
Good vibes, gorgeous products, and a few squeals of delight from customers = a very good day.
Day Three: Resurrection Sunday
Resurrection Sunday was here, and you already know what time it was — Ransom time!
Ransom is the Easter production from Transformation Church (shoutout to Transformation Nation, ayyyeee 🙌🏾). I’ve been tuning in for years, and it never misses: I laugh, I cry, I marvel at the talent, and most importantly, I soak in the message of redemption through Jesus Christ.
You can find clips, but Transformation doesn’t leave the full production up on YouTube. Catch Ransom live next year if you can. Trust me, it’s worth marking your calendar. You’re welcome. ❤️
Most years, I engrave eggs for my daughter’s basket that her grandmother sends from North Carolina.
This year, the basket is coming with her in May, so I opted to keep it simple.
No worries! She ate all the eggs anyway. 😂
Day Four: Blessed Be the Binge & Etc.
Okay, Day Four? It was time to get serious…about catching up on TV. And Hulu did not disappoint! A whole new season of The Handmaid’s Tale? 👀 Let’s go!!!
Once upon a time, I binged the first five seasons in a week (no regrets), so you already know I was locked in.
Is it dark? Yes.
Is it eerily close to some headlines in the real world? Absolutely.
Or El Salvador…One never knows. 😒
But a good story is a good story and catching up on them is what break is all about ‘round here. 🙌🏾 And hipping my husband to Paradise because I will not have him asking me questions about what all is going on while I’m deep into Season Three.
It was also around Day Four that I started a series of commissions, most of which are difficult to share at the moment because they’re usually surprises and have names and dates, etc. You know how it is. But, I’ve shared some snippets here and there on my socials.
Between secret surprise projects (that I wish I could share!) and scratching that creative itch, this spring break was a perfect mix of hustle and hush.
Tomorrow, it’s back to washing clothes, washing hair, and doing the mindset work to reenter the classroom. But I’m grateful.
Grateful for a little time to bloom, create, and breathe.
Because sometimes, the best break isn’t about escaping life…
It’s about adding a few more beautiful moments to it. 😌
